This recipe is super easy to make with only a handful of ingredients. Serve with Pea Pulao and Cucumber Raita, or with garlic bread for a light meal.
My grandma’s recipe with just 4 simple ingredients: fried onions, salt, ginger and garlic paste, yogurt. My fav part though are the potatoes as they soak up all the delicious chicken flavour. 😋

1 chicken (whole or cut in pieces)
2 tsp salt
2 tsp ginger & garlic paste
1 cup yogurt
1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
4 potatoes
½ cup oil
Directions
- Beat yogurt and add garlic-ginger paste and salt in it.
- Marinate chicken in yogurt mixture for at least 2Â hours.
- Slice the onion thinly.
- Cut each potato into large pieces; so that each piece is roughly the same size. Season with salt.
- In hot oil fry the onions till golden brown.
- In the same oil add the marinated chicken and potatoes.
- Stir fry on high flame for a minute, or until the chicken changes colour.
- Reduce flame to medium and cover and cook for approximately an hour. Flip the chicken and potatoes every 15-20 minutes to cook evenly.
- When all water has dried up, continue to cook uncovered so that the chicken starts to brown/roast slightly. Turn off heat and serve hot.
Notes
- You can use whole chicken or pieces for this recipe. Whole chicken is more presentable, but I usually cook pieces because it’s easier to manage.
